Forced Gym Class at BCIT

Right now, students studying Computer Science Technology at British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) are being forced into have gym class at least 45 minutes a week, or else they would not be able to graduate. This is not happening to any other class, and is considered unfair by most of the students taking the course.

Most people believe that students taking a course that involve working with computers would make them "nerds" and the stereotype would mean that they are unfit and spend all of their class working on computers and being unhealthy and unfit. By forcing them to exercise they would live longer and healthier.

However, most of the students are protesting for a reason. They believe that as adults they can make their own choices on how to live healthy and that it's not the schools decision. Students have also been reported to instead find a quiet spot , stay out of sight and catch up on schoolwork. Some students also lie to their instructors about how long they've been exercising to get out of doing the actual amount. They also dislike the fact that they're the only ones having to be forced to exercise while everyone in the other classes get to continue on with their work.

I think that it's unfair that gym is being forced upon students. I actually somewhat consider myself a computer nerd and would not like the idea of being part of the few people forced to have gym due to a stereotype that computer nerds are unhealthy and lazy

  1. John, I think you rushed and maybe almost forgot to post since it was posted at 8:48 but for next time, I suggest you planning ahead of time instead of doing at last minute. Also I think your sentences are good but I think you should extend a bit more. I think you should write longer paragraphs instead of some small paragraphs. Also you forgot to put a period at the end of the last sentence of the last paragraph.

  2. Nice concise introduction John - you provide a brief summary of the issue (albeit a bit short) but it does give enough context for readers who might not be in our class. I also agree with Colin's feedback (but I do wish Colin also gave some examples to back up his general advice about elaborating - eg. expand how?)

I am a bit confused about the part where you said students hide out from gym (I do not recall reading that part). You seem to touch on the main issue - madatory for one group and they are adult learners. I would suggest even stronger language to get your point across - Do you think the College is discriminating upon this one group because they are "stereotypical computer programmers" ? How about the fact that they pay for their program in post secondary, like other adults, and as both adults and paying consumers/customers of BCITs product (program) they should be able to decide if they want the option of phys ed, not make it mandatory. I see that is your opinion - work on using the vocab to enhyance your position more.
